Final Destination:
Worgl (REX trains)
Saalfelden (S-Bahn trains)

Monday - Friday

The train service between Salzburg and Zell am See is split between REX (regional trains) and S-Bahn (commuter trains); the S-Bahn trains are the slower of the two services.

However, until 16:00 the timetable is arranged so that in one hour (the even hours) there are no direct trains, but in the odd hours the faster REX trains depart around 20 mins before the S-Bahn train.

Hence the REX trains depart in every other hour (the odd hours) until around 19:15 and then there is a gap of more than three hours in the service of direct trains, until the final S-Bahn of the train departs after 22:00.

Saturday - Sunday

At weekends before 19:00 there are no REX trains, but the service of S-Bahn trains is supplemented by an IC train and a Railjet train.

If you want/need to depart Salzburg in the hours when there are no direct trains, you can take trains from Salzburg to Schwarzach-St Veit and make a simple connection there for Zell am See.

Mon - Fri = 16  x trains per day
Sat/Sun = 9 x trains per day
On Saturdays the regular train service is supplemented by a Railjet train which departs Salzburg at 14:15.

OBB Guide

OBB is the national rail operator and its booking service offers journeys by express trains within Austria, as well as international journeys which don't involve making a connection outside of Austria.

It pays off to book online, as the discounted 'Sparscheine' tickets are only ever made available on the website, and when making international journeys to and from Austria, these Sparscheine tickets tend to be cheaper.
OBB can offer particularly good value for money when travelling with children on international rail journeys, but something to watch out for when travelling between Austria and Germany on daytime trains, is that reservations are an optional extra; but if you book 1st class tickets with the Germany railways website DB, the reservations are complimentary.

OBB often takes a unique approach to its booking path, but a key thing to keep in mind is that the first price you will see for any journey is that of a Second Class seat.
The costs of upgrading to first class, a reservation, or a sleeping cabin etc, is then added to this price.
