Taking the lovely train ride to Mayrhofen makes for a wonderful day trip from Salzburg
During the day the trains to Jenbach typically depart from Salzburg every other hour; in the even hours.
The connecting time trains at Jenbach will be around 20 mins so making the transfer should be relatively stress-free.
You'll need to depart from Salzburg from 17:00 in order to make the end-2-end journey by train.

The Railjets use a new line between Worgl and Jenbach that's mainly in tunnel and which saves around 20 mins on the old route.
However, the tunnels take the trains away from what had been the scenic highlight of the journey.
Connections at Jenbach:
Change trains at Jenbach for two scenic mountain railways.
(1) The Zillertalbahn to Mayrhofeen; between the end of May and Mid-October 1 x train per day is operated by steam locomotives.
Steam locomotives also propel 1 x train of day at weekends between late April and late May.
(2) The Achenseebahn to Achensee; this line is exclusively operated by steam locomotives between the end of April and the end of October
In Mayrhofen the rail station is within a 15 min walk of the base stations of two cable cars, the Ahornbahn and Penkenbahn, which provide amazing views so are worth the ride, even if you won't be strapping on skis when you reach the summits of the mountains.
On Sat/Sun from the first weekend in May until the first weekend in October and on Mon-Fri from the first Monday in June to the final Friday in August; one round per day from Jenbach is by steam train!

The railway travels along the floor of a valley, so it doesn't ascend to great heights, though on a fine day, looking up at the surrounding mountains can be very lovely indeed.
