Salzburg to Hopfgarten im Brixental by train

How to take the rail journey Salzburg to a station adjacent to a lift leading up to a ski resort

There are two options for a taking a train from Salzburg to the ski slopes at Hopfgarten:

  1. There are direct trains, though they are much more frequent on Mon-Fri.
  2. The faster option is to take an express Railjet train to Worgl and then connect there for a local train.
Travelling via Worgl may seem odd as it located to the west of Hopfgarten (the direct trains will be heading there after they have called at Hopfgarten), but the speed of the Railjets compensates for that.

If you want to access ski slopes from Salzburg on a direct train during Mondays- Fridays then this route is the best option.

Though if you'll be happy to make what, should be, a straightforward connection between trains in Worgl, you'll get to the slopes quicker, if you follow the alternative route*.

OBB Guide

OBB is the national rail operator and its booking service offers journeys by express trains within Austria, as well as international journeys which don't involve making a connection outside of Austria.

It pays off to book online, as the discounted 'Sparscheine' tickets are only ever made available on the website, and when making international journeys to and from Austria, these Sparscheine tickets tend to be cheaper.
OBB can offer particularly good value for money when travelling with children on international rail journeys, but something to watch out for when travelling between Austria and Germany on daytime trains, is that reservations are an optional extra; but if you book 1st class tickets with the Germany railways website DB, the reservations are complimentary.

OBB often takes a unique approach to its booking path, but a key thing to keep in mind is that the first price you will see for any journey is that of a Second Class seat.
The costs of upgrading to first class, a reservation, or a sleeping cabin etc, is then added to this price.

Travelling on Monday-Friday:

During the day on Monday - Friday these direct REX trains depart in every other hour (the odd hours) until around 19:15.

Travelling on weekends:

At weekends the REX trains which depart from Salzburg before 19:00 don't travel beyond Saalfden, so aren't direct to Hopfgarten.
Most of those trains don't have good connections on to Hopfgarten either.
So at weekends the best option is usually to travel via Worgl.

Option 2: the faster, but indirect route

Despite the need to change trains and the longer distance involved, this routing via Worgl is quicker and (usually) much cheaper than taking the direct trains.

This is by the most convenient train journey option during the day at weekends when no direct trains are available from Salzburg.

The connecting time between trains in Worgl is usually only around 7 mins; and the connection can normally be relied upon, as the Railjets are generally very punctual.

In contrast to the alternative route, which involves travelling on direct REX trains, discounted 'Sparscheine' tickets are available on this route via Worgl, so if you're booking in advance it can be more than €10 cheaper than the direct trains.

Trains departing at different times can be cheaper than others leaving on the same day, so you may need to look through the day's departures to find the cheapest fares.
