Between Modane and Turin

Paris to Venezia / Venice / Venedig by train

How to take a train journey from Paris to Venezia / Venice

The options for taking the train from Paris to Florence have been reduced recently because the overnight train from Paris to Italy has been cancelled permanently and the late morning TGV from Paris has been temporarily withdrawn.

Leaving three options:

  1. Taking the first TGV of the day and making connections in Torino/Turin and at the Centrale station in Milano.
It involves making two connections, but avoids the need to transfer between stations in Milano, hence this is the journey option which is described below.
  2. Taking the same TGV train, but remaining on it until it arrives in Milano, transferring between two different stations in that city and taking the train on Venezia/Venice from Milano.
  3. If you look up the journey on OuiSNCFyou won't see the option of travelling via Turin, but will instead journeys with two connections, in Switzerland and in Milan.

Routes

From Paris Gare de Lyon/Paris Lyon to Venezia Santa Lucia/Venice S. L.

Travel Information

Note that this trains depart from the Gare De Lyon in Paris.

Final Destination: Milano

1 x connection per day

This combination of trains involves making connections at Torino Porta Susa and Milano Centrale stations.

ShowMeTheJourney recommends this routing as the required connections should be exceptionally straightforward.

In Torino Porta Susa station, the train on to Milano, should be leaving from the same platform/track that the train from Paris will have arrived at.
Then in Milano Centrale all you'll have to do is walk from one train to the other using the main concourse.

When looking up this journey most of the options will show only 1 x change of train (in Milano).
However, the train from Paris will arrive at Porta Garibaldi station, but the train on to Venezia will be departing from Milano Centrale station.

These two stations are comparatively close to each other, you can walk between them in 12 - 20 minutes, but if you don't want to set off on foot, you can take a two station hop on the Milano Metro or take a taxi - or a local train if one is due to depart.
But there's no need to take these steps if you make the suggested 'additional' connection in Torino.

Tickets

Online bookings open: Three months ahead (usually)

If you'll be heading to the historical heart of Venice make sure you specifically book tickets to Venezia S. Lucia station and not to Venezia Mestre station.

Trainline will charge a booking fee for this Paris to Venice journey by day. but it has been singled out, because it offers the combinations of trains which avoid having to transfer between different stations in Milano.

The journey options you should see on Trainline which involve making the connections between trains at Torino Porta Susa and Milano Centrale stations are:
(1) Depart Paris at 06:30, arrive Venice at 16:42 with '2 changes' and a journey time of 10hr 12mins
(2) Depart Paris at 10:39, arrive Venice at 21:03 with '2 changes' and a journey time of 10hr 24mins

When looking up this journey on Trainline you will also see other journey options with only '1 change' that can also be cheaper.

But those journey options will involve making the transfer from Porta Garibaldi station to Milano Centrale station - either by local train, metro, taxi or on foot.
And pay particular attention to the departure times as some of the connections suggested by Trainline only allow 25 mins to make this transfer - and it will take a minimum of 15 mins.

In the event of a delayed train from Paris (and not because a Metro train has broken down, or a taxi getting stuck in traffic) tickets can be transferred to a later departure on from Milano - but it's a hassle best avoided.

Oui-SNCF will also sell the Paris > Venice journey which involves making a connection between stations in Milano, so if you won't mind making the transfer and want to travel at the cheapest possible total price, it can be worth looking this journey up Oui.SNCF so that you can compare prices.

This is, in our humble opinion, one of the most exciting journeys you can take on European express trains.

We love the mix of high speed travel and stunning Alpine scenery

Aside from the wow factor of the speed, most high speed train journeys aren't scenically interesting, when high speed lines pass through hills and mountains, they tend to dive into tunnels.

This journey picks up in terms of scenery once the train leaves the high speed line behind - and that's what makes this journey so exceptional, the alpine views from a TGV train don't get better than this!

Final Destination: Roma or Napoli or Salerrno

These are the Frecce trains from Torino to Milano Centrale station.
Up to eight Frecce trains per day from Torino call at Milano Porta Garibaldi station instead of at Milano Centrale.
Those trains to Porta Garibaldi station can plug two gaps between the departures of these trains to Milano Centrale.

If your final destination can be easily accessed by Line M2 or Line M5 of the Milano Metro you can connect into these lines at Porta Garibaldi station.
Connections are also available into trains to Malpensa Airport at Milano Porta Garibaldi.
Though Metro Line M2 and the Malpensa Airport trains are also available at Milano Centrale and connection to Metro Line M3 is also available at Centrale station.

Also the final Frecce train of the day departs Torino Porta Nuova at 18:50 and from Torino Porta Susa at 19:00.

---------------------------------------------------------

There are also Italo trains between Torino and Milano Centrale which take the same high speed route, so they match the journey times of Trenitalia's Frecce trains.

They can also be cheaper - the departure times and prices of the two services can be compared on the Omio and Trainline booking websites, see the 'Ticket Information' below.

If you are new to travelling by train in Italy, our Italian Train Travel Guide is packed with info and useful links to help ensure you’ll have a stress-free trip.

---------------------------------------------------------

Departing from Torino/Turin:

These trains to Milano on this high speed route commence their journeys at Torino Porta Nuova station.

They depart from there around 10 mins before they depart from Torino Porta Susa.

If you will be commencing your journey on the Torino Metro, it can make sense to head to Porta Susa in order to take these trains.
As all seats are reserved, including yours, you won't have to worry about no spare seats being available if you board at Torino Porta Susa.

The city centre Metro stations are Re:Umberto and Vinzaglio.

Though if you will be travelling with luggage, it can be a better idea to board these trains at Porta Nuova, you'll increase your chances of being able to find an optimum space in which to store your bags.

Though whether you travel from Porta Susa or Porta Nuova stations makes no difference to the ticket price.

---------------------------------------------------------

Taking the Regionale Veloce trains:

If you will be booking tickets last minute at the station, or will be travelling with a rail pass, you can save money if you take the (much) slower Regionale Veloce (RV) trains from Torino to Milano.

The high speed part of the journey is the first stage to Brescia, on which the train will travel at more than 250 km/h, but only for around 15 minutes

If you're on the left of the train (when facing the direction of travel) keep a look out before Desenzano for a fleeting, but incredible view of Lake Garda - though you'll have to hope for good weather.

But this is a journey that saves the best to last as the train heads across the waters of the lagoon to reach the heart of historic Venice/Venezia.
