Prior to the Covid-19 pandemic there were up to four trains per day from Milano to Trieste, so hopefully the reduction to only one daily train is temporary.
If you want to depart from Milano later in the day, most of the trains to Venezia S. Lucia have good connections from there into Regionale trains on to Trieste.
If you're on the left of the train (when facing the direction of travel) keep a look out before Desenzano for a fleeting, incredible view of Lake Garda.
But for the final 30 mins of the journey there are frequent sea views from the right hand side of the train.
The only high speed part of the trip is that between Milano and Brescia when the train will travel at more than 250 km/h for only 20 minutes
