Travel Information

There are up to 4 x trains per hour from Innsbruck to Jenbach, where straightforward connections are available into the trains operated by the Zillertalbahn to Mayrhofen

The optimum/fastest connections, are usually available by taking the Railjet or EC trains to Jenbach from Innsbruck.
These trains are scheduled to have a 7 minute connection into the trains on to Mayrhofen; hence it being a good idea to book the end-to-end journey before departing from Innsbruck.

During the day the timetable is usually arranged so that an EC train, heading to Munchen, departs Innsbruck in even hours, while a Railjet train departs in odd hours.

In contrast, the S-Bahn and Rex trains from Innsbruck have comparatively poor connections at Jenbach into the Zillertalbahn trains;, so avoid travelling by them if possible because the end-to-end journey will be around 40 mins longer.

OBB doesn't operate the railway line, the Zillertalbahn, between Jenbach and Mayrhofen, but through tickets for the end-to-end journey can be purchased in Innsbruck station.
Booking to Mayrhofen in Innsbruck and not at Jenbach is recommended because it takes the pressure off making the connection at the latter station.

OBB Guide

OBB is the national rail operator and its booking service offers journeys by express trains within Austria, as well as international journeys which don't involve making a connection outside of Austria.

It pays off to book online, as the discounted 'Sparscheine' tickets are only ever made available on the website, and when making international journeys to and from Austria, these Sparscheine tickets tend to be cheaper.
OBB can offer particularly good value for money when travelling with children on international rail journeys, but something to watch out for when travelling between Austria and Germany on daytime trains, is that reservations are an optional extra; but if you book 1st class tickets with the Germany railways website DB, the reservations are complimentary.

OBB often takes a unique approach to its booking path, but a key thing to keep in mind is that the first price you will see for any journey is that of a Second Class seat.
The costs of upgrading to first class, a reservation, or a sleeping cabin etc, is then added to this price.

The railway travels along the floor of a valley, so it doesn't ascend to great heights, though on a fine day, looking up at the surrounding mountains can be very lovely indeed.

This video, which wasn't taken by SMTJ, showcases the journey experience beautifully.
