There are now two distinct travel options when taking a train from München/Munich to beautiful Lindau on the shore of the Bodensee.
(1) The newly improved express train service on which very smart EEC traina now complete the journey in under two hours.
However, they arrive at a new station, Lindau-Reutin, which is a 10-15 min walk from the lovely island on which the old town is located.
Though an option is to connect there for a train to Lindau-Insel station, which lives up to its name as it's on the island.
(2) Regio trains, operated by ALX and not by DB, still provide a direct service to Lindau-Insel station.
If you book ahead you can save money, by taking the express trains, but if you will be buying tickets last minute at the station, the Regio trains will be the cheaper option.

If you're booking only a couple of days ahead, you will usually save money if you target these EC trains when making a train journey from Munich to Lindau

On the DB (German national railways) ticket booking service you can compare these Regio trains (operated by ALX) from Munchen/Munich to Lindau with the EEC trains
If you're booking from only just a few days ahead of your travel date. those EC trains are also cheaper.
Though if you book journeys by the ALX trains, and will be departing Munich after 09:00, the cheaper option is to purchase a 'Regio-Ticket Allgäu-Schwaben' ticket.
Because if you will be travelling in a group, other adults in your party can travel at a reduced rate; and these tickets are not valid on the EC trains.
The 'Regio' trains on this route are operated by Alex and not by Deutsche Bahn, but rail passes are still valid.

If you have booked a ticket online, then aim to be at Munchen Hbf no later than around 10 mins before the departure of the train.
These ALX trains to Lindau usually depart from Gleis (track/platforms) 27-36 in Munchen Hbf and these are some distance from the main concourse.
If you will be purchasing tickets at Munchen Hbf then be at the station a minimum of 20 mins before departure
The highlight of this journey comes at its climax when trains head out on a bridge to reach the island in the Bodensee, on which the old town of Lindau is located.
