How to take a train journey from Milan/Milano to Monterrosso in the Cinque Terre

The beautiful Cinque Terre coastal villages have become one of the most popular Italian tourist destinations and they can be accessed from Milan/Milano by direct train.
South of Genova the journey along the coast by train is also wonderful!

Monterosso is the village with station served by the express trains, and if you will be heading to the other four villages further to the south; Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore, you can connect in Monterosso into local trains

Trains departing at different times can be cheaper than others leaving on the same day, so you may need to look through the day's departures to find the cheapest fares.
Check that you are booking the direct train - on Trenitalia look for the journeys that only have a time in the Duration column.

Seats on these trains can sell out days in advance, particularly in the summer months.

If they are, the alternative is to travel this route via Regionale trains, connecting between trains in Genova; at Genova Brignole station.

Rail pass users:

Users of Eurail and Interrail passes don't have to reserve on Intercity trains, though this is a route on which making a reservation is definitely recommended, but if you wait until you are in Italy to book reservations for these trains, they may be sold out, particularly in the summer months.

So this is an instance when making reservations before you arrive in Italy, either on the Eurail or InterRail apps or on the ItaliaRail website - can be the best option,

  • Family Offer for when groups of 2 - 5 people are travelling together and at least one of the party is a aged 11 and under.
  • The Children Free Offer is available for journeys by Frecce trains, when groups of 2 - 5 people are travelling together and at least one of the party is a aged 15 and under.
    Those aged 15 and under travel for free, but the Adults will need to purchase full price 'Base' tickets.
