SJ InterCity travel summary:

Two types of train are used by SJ on its InterCity (IC) services:

(1) Travel on the longer distance routes - including, for the time being the Stockholm ↔ Oslo route and take a trip back in time as these locomotive hauled trains, pictured at the top of the page, have been in service for more than 35 years - but unsurprisingly they have been modernised, to create a light and airy on board atmosphere.

They're still the fastest, premium trains between Stockholm and some cities to the north of the capital, they're most commonly found on the routes via Borlange.

A bistro counter will be available on these trains.

(2) Travel on these two shorter distance routes:

(1) Stockholm - Gavle (the IC trains which don't travel beyond Gavle)
(2) Stockholm - Linkoping
..and you'll be travelling on the double-decked trains that SJ also uses for some of its Regional services to/from Stockholm.

No on board catering will be available on these trains.

Reservations & using rail passes:

Book a ticket on the SJ website or app, or at a station for a journey by IC trains and a complimentary seat reservation will be included

Rail pass users can OPT to make reservations prior to boarding these trains for journeys within Sweden, but they're compulsory on the Stockholm ↔ Oslo route*.

These can be arranged, without a booking fee at on the SJ website, they cab no longer be arranged at station within Sweden.

*= the reservation fee on this route has recently been increased and is now the equivalent of €6.60 in 2nd class and €16 in 1st class.

Bicycles:

Only bagged folded bikes can be taken aboard these trains (any SJ train), no other bicycles are permitted.
