Milano / Milan / Mailand to Como by train

How to travel from Milan to Como by train

The town of Como is only 50km to the north of Milano, so it's served by trains on the city's suburban rail network, which is managed by Trenord.

The town centre in Como is served by multiple stations, with the main railway station being San Giovanni, as it's located on the main railway route on to Switzerland.
Como S. Giovanni is served by both Regionale and express trains, the latter are non-stop from Milano, but if you'll be taking a day trip from Milan, the express trains will be a much more expensive option.

For a day trip from Milan, the best option is to take trains to an alternative station, Como Lago.
It lives up to its name with a lake shore location and is also conveniently located in the town centre.

Good to Know

There are other options for taking the train from Milano to Como, one of which involves taking faster trains from Milano Centrale station.

But if you want to head to Lake Como on a fabulous day trip from Milano, we recommend taking the trains on THIS particular route for three reasons
(1) Como Nord Lago station lives up to its name, it is across the street from the shore of Lake Como.
(2) This is the most frequent train service from Milano to Como.
(3) it tends to be cheaper too, though the trains on this route are 2nd class only.

You will in effect be travelling on a Milano commuter route, on trains which happen to arrive in Como.

Final Destination: Locarno

This service provides a useful link for those making long distance journeys to Como from other cities in Italy because it is the only one of the multiple train services from Milano to Como, which departs from the city's main station; Milano Centrale

Though on this particular service there is a departure from Milano Centrale at around 09:43 and then no departures until 13:43.

The EC trains between Milano and Lugano also call at Como. S. Giovanni.

If you're making a booking online to Como via Milano from another station in Italy then the journey options will also include those EC trains.
But we don't recommend taking an EC train for a journey solely from Milano to Como, they're more expensive and no faster than thesee Regionale trains from Milano Centrale to Como.

Como S. Giovanni station is around a 10 min walk from the shores of Lake Como.

An alternative to these trains from Milano are the trains to Como S. Giovanni, which depart every 30 mins from Milano Porta Garibaldi station.

However, if you'll be making a day trip from central Milan to Lake Como those trains from Milano Cadorna station to Como Lago station are more convenient.
They also operate every 30 mins but they provide a direct link with the city centre and the shore of Lake Como.
