How to take the rail journey from Florence/Firenze to La Spezia

Visiting the renowned Cinque Terre villages is easily done a on day trip by train from Florence/Firenze.
Though you can simplify things by taking one of the direct trains from Firenze S.M.Novella station to La Spezia, as you will be connecting in La Spezia for the trains on to the five coastal villages.
When you look up the journey most of the options you will see involve making connections in Pisa, but this isn't necessary,

The Cinque Terre is an easy day trip from Firenze/Florence by train.
On Mondays to Saturdays take the 09:53 Regionale train from Firenze S.M.Novella and you should arrive in La Spezia Centrale at 12:20.
On Sundays there is usually a train at 10:53, which with a connection, will have you in the Cinque Terre by 13:30.

The trains will initially call at La Spezia Migliarina station, but take care not to leave the train there, you need to remain on the train until it arrives at La Spezia Centrale; the final stop.

There are typically 2 x trains per hour on from La Spezia which call at all of the Cinque Terre towns, Riomaggiore, Manorola, Corniglia, Vernazza and Monterosso
SMTJ has listed them in order of which is closest to La Spezia, though Monterosso, the furthest north is only around 20 mins from La Spezia by train.

Trenitlalia is the national rail operator in Italy and in addition to its cheaper types of ticket; it also typically offers other discounts available to non-Italians, which include:

  • Group Offers, provides for a discount of up to 50% when 3-5 Adults travel together.
  • Family Offer for when groups of 2 - 5 people are travelling together and at least one of the party is a aged 11 and under.
  • The Children Free Offer is available for journeys by Frecce trains, when groups of 2 - 5 people are travelling together and at least one of the party is a aged 15 and under.
    Those aged 15 and under travel for free, but the Adults will need to purchase full price 'Base' tickets.

Good to Know

SMTJ's recommendation is to buy a Cinque Terre Card online, before departing from Florence.
It will enable to hop around the five villages by train and if you purchase it online, it will save you the time of queueing to purchase it at the station in La Spezia.
It's best to hop on to the next train in La Spezia Centrale as soon as you arrive there, so that you'll max the time you can then spend in the five villages.
