Assisi is located off the main north to south railway route in Italy, so the town is served by comparatively few trains.
Hence it's a good idea to look up the departure times on the Trenitalia website, even if you will be buying tickets last minute at the station.
You won't need to book in advance to save money, so if you will be spending an extended period of time in beautiful Florence/Firenze and want to head off to Assisi on a day trip by train, you can choose a day when the weather will be fine, look up the timings of the train that evening and then head off to S.M.Novella station the next morning.
Final Destination: Foligno
All trains also call at: Perugia
If you want to take a day trip to wonderful Assisi from Florence/Firenze by train, there is usually a departure from S.M.Novella station at 08:02, which is scheduled to arrive in Assisi at 10:41.
Monday - Saturday = 5 x trains per day
Sunday = 6 x trains
Book early and save: No
Tickets will cost the same price if purchased at the station immediately before departure.
Though on this route there are two benefits of booking tickets for your journey in advance on the Trenitalia website.
(1) You can avoid what can be long queues for the ticket machines and ticket office at Firenze S.M. Novella station
(2) You can confirm the departure times on your chosen travel date - this isn't a route on which can turn up at the station in the expectation of hopping on a train.
