In Berlin the local commuter trains are the S-Bahn trains, and they're included on the Metro-style map along with the U-bahn (subway trains).
Potsdam station is on this map, but if you'll be heading to see the palaces on a day trip, the Regio trains will not only get you there faster, they also go to a more convenient station.
And they call at multiple stations in central Berlin.
Final Destination: Magdeburg or Brandenburg
All trains also arrive at: Potsdam Charlottenhof and Potsdam Park Sanssouci;
All trains also depart from:
Berlin Alexanderplatz and Berlin Friedrichstraße and Berlin Zoologischer Garten
The quickest route between Berlin Hbf and central Potsdam is to take a Regional (Regio) train on lines RE1, RB21 or RB22 from Berlin Hbf to Potsdam Hbf station.
These trains all depart from the upper level platforms at Berlin Hbf.
The big plus of taking a Regio train to Potsdam, aside from the fact that they are faster than the S-Bahn trains, is that they also call at a station adjacent to the palaces in Potsdam - and the S-Bahn trains don't call there
Trains on these lines/routes:
RB1 (heading to Brandenburg and NOT those heading to Magdeburg) – 1 x train per hour
RB 22 (trains heading to Konigs Wusterhausen) – 1 x train per hour
RB 21 (trains heading to Wustermark) – certain hours only
all call at Potsdam Park Sanssouci - the closest station to the Potsdam palaces
These trains also call at Potsdam Charlottenhof station, but this station is no nearer to the Charlottenburg Palace than Potsdam Park Sanssouci station.
Buy tickets at the station on the day you want to travel.
2 x trains per hour
Tickets for this journey can't be booked online.
