Attributes of the train
These trains (which used to be branded as Talgo services, due to the type of coaches) are used on most Spanish express train routes, which don't use the high speed lines.
The coaches are shorter than typically used on other European express train services, which make for a pleasant on-board ambience.
The seats all face in the same direction in each coach/car - they should be rotated so that they face the direction of travel.
They also seem low prior to boarding, but once you're on board the coaches are spacious.
You must travel in the seats you have been assigned.
This is because of the specific terms and conditions of booking tickets to travel by the larga-distancia train services.
When booking Basico or Elige tickets there will be an option to pay an additional charge in order to choose specific seats from a seating plan, while a benefit of booking Prémium tickets is the lack of a charge of using this seating plan.
So if you haven't taken advantage of the seat selection service when booking, you can't then choose to sit in an alternative seat when boarding.
If you opted to choose a seat, the logic is that you will therefore be satisfied with that seat, so won't be able to seat in an alternative. but if you have paid to use the seat selection service or booked Prémium tickets you can ask the conductor if you can move seats.
If you will be travelling long distance by these trains then taking food on board with you is recommended, the only catering on board is from a somewhat basic bar car.
Also note that these trains aren't equipped with Wi-fi or power sockets.
Only folded bicycles can be taken on board these IC trains as hand luggage, but they must be placed in a travel case, or bag which can have a maximum height/width of 180cm.
The routes taken by Talgo trains, which have now been re-branded as InterCity (IC) services, are :
(1) Barcelona Franca - Barcelona Sants - Tarragona - Castelo de la Plana - Valencia Nord - Alicante - Murcia - Cartegana or Lorca
(2) Madrid - Alcazar de San Juan - Almeira
