Wien / Vienna to Zagreb by train

How to take a train journey from Wien/Vienna to Zagreb

The Austrian and Croatian capitals are linked by a daily direct train, but travelling overnight isn't feasible on this route.
Also if you'll be planning a Eurail or InterRail itinerary featuring both Zagreb and Vienna, and don't mind an early morning departure, you'll be able to fully appreciate the stunning scenery when travelling in the opposite direction.

*= Sparschiene tickets are the discounted tickets sold for long distance express train travel by OBB.

We found that they tend to be available fairly randomly for this direct train from Vienna/Wien to Zagreb, which matters as you can save more than €50 compared to the standard price.
However, OBB is the only online outlet  for these discounted tickets.

So try and be flexible re: your travel dates.
Unfortunately booking early, doesn't seem to guarantee that the discounted will be available on the day, that you want to make the journey.
If you wait and book on the day of travel at Wien Hbf, then you will have to pay the full price.

The train usually departs from Wien Hbf at around at 15:58

Rail Pass Users:

The reservation rules are different to the usual journeys by EC trains when using a rail pass to travel to Croatia by these trains.
Rail pass users must make reservations prior to boarding, irrespective if you will be using a 1st or 2nd class pass.

OBB Guide

OBB is the national rail operator and its booking service offers journeys by express trains within Austria, as well as international journeys which don't involve making a connection outside of Austria.

It pays off to book online, as the discounted 'Sparscheine' tickets are only ever made available on the website, and when making international journeys to and from Austria, these Sparscheine tickets tend to be cheaper.
OBB can offer particularly good value for money when travelling with children on international rail journeys, but something to watch out for when travelling between Austria and Germany on daytime trains, is that reservations are an optional extra; but if you book 1st class tickets with the Germany railways website DB, the reservations are complimentary.

OBB often takes a unique approach to its booking path, but a key thing to keep in mind is that the first price you will see for any journey is that of a Second Class seat.
The costs of upgrading to first class, a reservation, or a sleeping cabin etc, is then added to this price.

This journey includes the passage over the fabulous Semmering Pass, so wonderful that it's a U.N.E.S.C.O. World Heritage Site, though that's partially due to the construction methods and not just because of the scenery.

The best views* can be seen from the left of the train (when facing the direction of travel) after departure from Wiener Neustadt.

*But you need to be travelling between April and October to see them - as the train usually departs from Wien Hbf at around at 15:58 so doesn't reach the Semmering Pass until early evening.

If you're following a rail pass itinerary, then this journey is much more spectacular in the opposite direction; see the guide below.
There's some stunning Slovenian scenery that this train to Zagreb travels through in darkness.
