Roma / Rome to San Remo / Sanremo by train

Look at the railway map of Europe and there is a railway which tantalizingly is either close to or right by Italy's Mediterranean Coast, but there is only direct train per day, which makes its way along the northern half of this route, all the way from Rome to the Italian Riviera.

The alternative indirect trains:

When you look up this Rome to Sanremo train journey on the ticket booking websites, you will see up to five other options - all of which involve:

(1) taking a Frecce or Intercity train from Rome to Genova P. Principe station;

(2) Connecting at Genova P. Principe station for a train on to Sanremo/San Remo.

Take those alternative options, and:

  • the overall journey time will be similar to, or quicker than, taking this direct train
  • you can arrive in San Remo/Sanremo before night fall
  • you will get to experience one of Europe's most spectacular coastal train journeys by daylight.

North of Grosetto the railway line is often by the coast, but this direct train doesn't depart until the late afternoon, so it will spend most of its journey travelling at dusk or after night fall.
