Tickets

Book early and save: Yes

Online bookings open: 6 months ahead of the travel date - usually

However, if you book more than 4 months ahead, you may only see more expensive tickets, than are typically offered on this route.

When making an online booking, check that you’re looking at booking info for the direct EC train(s)' these trains depart from Munich at around 07:34 (Sat/Sun) or 11:34 (daily).

Book 1st class journey tickets on DB Bahn and your seat reservation is included, but they're optional when booking 2nd class tickets.

Rail Pass Users:

The reservation rules are different when using a rail pass to travel to Italy by these trains.

Rail pass users must make reservations prior to boarding, irrespective if you will be using a 1st or 2nd class pass.

However, this rail pass 'supplement' is not sold online by DB Bahn, but it can be arranged without payment of a booking fee at a Reisezentrum Travel desk at any hauptbahnhof station, including Munchen Hbf.

Or you can avoid paying the rail pass reservation fee, by taking this alternative journey option.

Travelling from Munchen Ost station:

When making a booking online with DB, it uses ‘Munich (München)’ as a default for looking up journeys from the city in the ‘From’ box.
But it is possible to select München Ost as the ‘From’ station (you need to use the German spelling with the character (the umlaut) over the ‘u’).
You won’t save any money by booking from München Ost, but the departure time of your train from Munchen Ost will be on your ticket.

Booking agents, when looking up Munchen to Venezia journeys, will see that the fastest journey from Munchen is from Munchen Ost - so can assume that this is where you want to join the train.

If you're using an agent confirm whether your ticket has been booked from Munchen Hbf or Munchen Ost - particularly if you DO want to join the train at Munchen Hbf.

Venezia Mestre station:

These trains also call at Venezia Mestre before they arrive at Venezia St Lucia; which is the station in the historic heart of Venice/Venezia.
If you will be heading to historic Venice/Venezia take care when booking online, or using an agent, that your ticket is valid to Venezia St Lucia.

Booking agents can type Munchen - Venezia into their systems and see that journeys to Venezia Mestre are faster AND assume that you will want to leave the train there.

DB Guide

DB is the national railway operator in Germany, so its website can be used for booking journeys by German express trains; the ICE and IC trains and it doesn't charge booking fees.
It also sells tickets for journeys by direct trains on all international routes from Germany regardless of whether DB is operating the train service.

It also sells an extensive range of end-to-end journeys which involve making connections both within Germany and in neighboring countries, but journeys between Germany and Britain cannot be booked on DB.

A key feature of DB website worth keeping mind is that it offers 1st class ticket purchasers complimentary seat reservations on journeys both within and to/from Germany.

Seat reservations for daytime in both 1st and 2nd class can also be booked separately from tickets.

Omio from €35.90

Omio Guide

Omio is an online ticket agency which offers tickets for rail journeys in France, Germany, Great Britain, Italy and Spain.

The three key advantages of using Omio are

  • it offers prices in multiple currencies
  • it usually offers price comparison with other modes of travel including flights and buses
  • when visiting Europe, you can book journeys in multiple countries in one transaction.

The disadvantage of booking with Omio is that it often adds a booking fee to the final price; therefore when it does so without offering a price advantage, SMTJ doesn't tend to offer Omio as a booking option.

This is one of the most spectacular journeys undertaken by European express trains.

So if the timings suit we highly recommend making this journey by day instead of taking the overnight train.

The part of train journey between Rosenheim and Verona is one of the most incredible in Europe, but sit on the right of the train (when facing the direction of travel) to see the best of the stunning views.
Though the first of the scenic highlights, when the train follows the River Inn from Kuftstein into Innsbruck, is on the left.
But the most incredible part of the journey is that between Innsbruck and the border at Brennero.

And as can be seen in that video, the best of the views on this part of the train ride can be seen on the right.

Between Brennero and Verona the railway route primarily travels through a massive valley, by the River Adige and on this part of the journey, there are some great views to be had from either side of the train.

But the reason why ShowMeTheJourney featured this particular train ride on our Best Express Train Journeys list, is because it doesn't solely feature the incredible passage through the Alps; it also concludes with a flourish!
In order to reach journey's end at Venezia S. Lucia station, the train has to cross the Venetian lagoon.

So as there won't be any hurry to leave the train on arrival, ShowMeTheJourney recommends savouring every last moment by remaining in your seat until you pull into the station.

Option 2: Travel through the night on a Nightjet

Rail pass users must reserve before boarding this train.

However, these rail pass reservations can NO longer be booked online the DB website.

If you want to reserve seats, berths in couchettes or beds in the sleeping cabins before you arrive in Germany, the best option is to pay a booking fee and use the Eurail or InterRail reservation services.

Or you can avoid the booking fees by arranging the reservations when you arrive in Germany, by purchasing them at a Reisezentrum travel desk, which you will find in any hauptbahnhof.

Though it's best to do this at the first hauptbahnhof (city centre station) that you will arrive at, the later you leave booking your accommodation, the more likely it is that your preferences will be sold out.

OBB Guide

OBB is the national rail operator and its booking service offers journeys by express trains within Austria, as well as international journeys which don't involve making a connection outside of Austria.

It pays off to book online, as the discounted 'Sparscheine' tickets are only ever made available on the website, and when making international journeys to and from Austria, these Sparscheine tickets tend to be cheaper.
OBB can offer particularly good value for money when travelling with children on international rail journeys, but something to watch out for when travelling between Austria and Germany on daytime trains, is that reservations are an optional extra; but if you book 1st class tickets with the Germany railways website DB, the reservations are complimentary.

OBB often takes a unique approach to its booking path, but a key thing to keep in mind is that the first price you will see for any journey is that of a Second Class seat.
The costs of upgrading to first class, a reservation, or a sleeping cabin etc, is then added to this price.
