Between Rimini and Anonca

Milano / Milan / Mailand to Bari by train

How to make the journey by rail from Milan to Bari

When travelling from Milano to Bari by train during the day the express train service is provided by a mix of different Frecce services with the Frecciarossa trains being faster, as they whizz down the high speed line between Milano and Bologna.
The Frecciargento and Frecciabianca trains take the conventional route between those two cities and therefore make more station calls.

Travelling by day has two ticks in the box over taking the overnight train:
(1) the night train is usually scheduled to arrive in Bari before 06:00
(2) South of Rimini, this is one of Europe's most lovely coastal rail journeys.

Omio Guide

Omio is an online ticket agency which offers tickets for rail journeys in France, Germany, Great Britain, Italy and Spain.

The three key advantages of using Omio are

  • it offers prices in multiple currencies
  • it usually offers price comparison with other modes of travel including flights and buses
  • when visiting Europe, you can book journeys in multiple countries in one transaction.

The disadvantage of booking with Omio is that it often adds a booking fee to the final price; therefore when it does so without offering a price advantage, SMTJ doesn't tend to offer Omio as a booking option.

The remainder of the journey is on a conventional railway
However, if you:

  • take that first train of the day from Porta Garibaldi station.

Between Milano and Rimini the train travels across flat farm land, with nothing much to see.
Though these trains don't take he high speed line between Milan and Bologna, so pass through a string of towns, including Parma and Modena.

If your reserved seat is on the left the train (when facing the direction of travel) you'll be able to fully appreciate the highlights of the journey - which kick in after the train has departed from Rimini.
(If your seat isn't on the left, temporarily move over to one which is).

Once the train has travelled around 20 mins south of Rimini, you'll be able to revel in one of the best coastal train journeys in all of Europe.
For much of this part of the trip, the beach is all that separates The Adriatic from the train - a particular highlight is the part of the journey to the north of Ancona.

The sea views then continue, with the train travelling by the coast for around an hour in total either side of Pescara.
