Rail pass users need to reserve before boarding for journeys from Budapest, reservations can be arranged at the international travel desk at Budapest Keleti station.
Ideally do this when you first arrive at Keleti, or in Budapest, on the preceding train on your itinerary.
Or book the reservations online with Eurail or InterRail, but if you do so you will have to pay a booking fee.

Note that this train service now departs from Budapest-Nyugati station and NOT Budapest-Keleti station.
It is usually scheduled to depart from Budapest-Nyugati daily at 08:40 and on some timetables it is named 'Bathory'.
The overnight train to Warszawa still departs from Keleti-station.
Final Destination: Minsk-Passajirskii*
This train now conveys sleeping cars which continue beyond Warszawa to arrive in Minsk
Daytime coaches are available for journeys to Brest via Terespol.
The train also calls at: Katowice (connect for Krakow) and Warszawa Zachodnia
It's not a particularly stunning journey, though there are views over The Danube between Vác and Slovakia - from the left of the train (when facing the direction of travel).
But there are few other scenic highlights, so the most interesting aspect of this train ride is that you'll travel through four countries on one journey - Hungary, Slovakia, Czechia and Poland.
But despite that, this is a route on which our preference would be taking the overnight train.
