Penrith North Lakes station takes its name from the fact that is the closest station, used by fast express trains, to the northern half of The Lake District national park.

To the Lake District by local bus:
Hourly buses on routes X4 or X5 stop just outside the station and link Penrith North Lakes station to Keswick, on Derwentwater (journey time 41 minutes) and guaranteed connections are available in Keswick on to Basenthwaite village and Cockermouth.
Route 555 provides an hourly service on from Keswick to Ambleside, the location of Wordsworth’s cottage at Rydale and also serves Bowness-on-Windermere (so this route via Keswick can be a good alternative if the timings of the 508 service don't suit).
Bus route 508 provides 5 x connections per day on Mondays to Saturdays and 3 x connections on Sundays from the station to the villages of Pooley Bridge (where the Ullswater steamer boats can be boarded), Aira Force and Glenridding on Ullswater and it also provides the direct link from Penrith to Bowness-on-Windermere; it stops by the piers that the Windermere lake cruises leave from.
